Ordering the chest X-ray reading queue in TB screening
In a high-volume screening drive, software reads each plain digital chest radiograph and scores how abnormal it appears, so that scarce reader time and a limited stock of confirmatory molecular tests reach the highest-scoring films first. The clinical conclusion is still reached by a clinician on a confirmatory test.

What to check before you ship it in India
- Software that reads a radiograph in order to suggest or exclude a condition sits on the device side of the line. India's draft guidance on medical device software offers, as its own examples of software as a medical device, computer-aided detection software that analyses X-ray images and an AI tool intended for triage or screening; the exclusion it lists reaches systems intended only for admission, scheduling, billing or communication. That guidance is a draft issued for stakeholder comments and its cover notice says it is not meant to be used for legal or professional purposes — so settle the position under the Medical Devices Rules 2017 before deployment, not after.
- A radiograph travels with the patient's identifiers attached. Here the establishment is offering health services to the very people whose data it processes, so section 8(2) applies squarely: a processor may be engaged to read those images only under a valid contract. Self-serve terms accepted at signup by whoever ran the pilot are unlikely to be that contract.
