Classifying invoice and purchase-order lines into a spend taxonomy

Maps free-text line descriptions onto a shared commodity taxonomy such as UNSPSC, so the same bolt bought by four plants under four descriptions rolls into one category and the buyer can finally see what the organisation spends on it and how many suppliers are being paid to provide it.

Tools named for this

  • A text classifier trained on the buyer's own previously mapped history
  • A published commodity taxonomy such as UNSPSC
  • A spend warehouse or notebook the category managers can query

What to check before you ship it in India

  • Supplier master and invoice records for proprietorships identify a natural person. Section 8(1) keeps the buyer responsible for processing done on its behalf irrespective of any agreement to the contrary, whatever the vendor's own terms say.
  • A classifier trained on last year's mapping inherits last year's errors, and a category that was mis-scoped then is now mis-scoped at machine speed across every plant at once.
